Swapping Back to DOT4 from DOT5

Postby BBaxR6 » Sun Jun 27, 2010 9:08 am

Hey guys, I made the mistake of filling up my 750 with silicone-based DOT5, and I HATE it! I want to start fresh and go back to running high quality DOT4, but knowing how tenacious silicone is, I'm not real sure how to completely purge the master cylinder/line/calipers of the silicone crap. I was considering unbolting everything, letting it drain, then going to town with a can or two of brake cleaner to try and rinse all the old stuff away. Any thoughts on this approach? Good idea/bad idea? I'd mainly be concerned with 1) any ill effects of getting brake cleaner completely all over everything (seals, etc) 2) that I can get all the little nooks and crannies since DOT4 and DOT5 are horribly incompatible with each other.... Thanks in advance!

Trying to flush the DOT 5 fluid out with brake cleaner a bad idea.

The proper way of switching back is to disassemble ALL of the brake components and thoroughly clean with a mild solvent. Reassemble the braking components and lubricate the pistons and seals with DOT 4.

Bleed as necessary to purge the air out of the system.
