Advice on upgrade priorities

Postby cycle-nut » Wed Jul 20, 2011 3:20 pm

Back in 2002 I attended Cornerspeed rider school and remember Aaron giving advice on prioritizing money spent on performance mods. At that time, upgrading the rear shock was at the top of the major investment list. I know stock suspension has improved a lot over the past several years, especially fork components. Rear shock adjustablility seems to be better now with high/low damping and ride height adjustability.

My question is, what is the feeling on stock rear shock performance on the latest Japanese bikes (suzuki / yamaha)? Do todays stock shocks approach performance of pricey aftermarket shocks for street / occassional track day use?

I'm trying to decide if the gap in performace is worth the substantial invenstment for aftermarket shocks?

stock shocks are coming along for sure. you can easily ride into the advanced group on it. the adjustment range is fine for most humans, but a spring swap could help if you are a big boy/girl. your GSXR doesn't have a ride-height adjustable shock, BUT, you can shim the top clevis to get the same effect.

i'd say if you're just trackdaying, then the stock shock can take you a long way...
