Storing a gas tank? Prepping for no rust

Postby KDA » Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:36 pm

Can anyone offer recommendations on prepping a gas tank for storage so it does not rust inside? I've considered spraying or pouring some light weight oil in there and rolling it around to cover the inner surface. Also, I found a slightly dented tank and race bodywork for my RC at a pretty cheap price that I am considering buying. The tank was used on a bike until Aug of this year. It has some very slight surface rust starting to show on the seams inside. Any recommendations on prepaing the tank if I decide to buy it. Thanks for any input.

Best thing I know to do is just fill it up as much as you can and make sure to put some fuel stabilizer in it. Make sure to run it a little bit with the fuel stabil. so it gets in all the fuel lines and injectors. It will keep it from getting any deposits.

If the tank were going to sit empty for any length of time, I would spray a light coating of rust preventative oil like CimGuard, or even WD-40 and then blow it dry inside with compressed air.

When you are ready to install it on the bike, THOROUGHLY rinse a couple of times with gasoline and you should be good to go.

If the tank is going to be stored wet, then take Claw’s advice and fill it to the top with fresh gas and add the correct amount of StaBil and you are good to go for at least a year like this.

Yes, I was talking about storing a tank empty on a shelf. I will go with WD-40 and blow it dry. I guess it would not hurt to re-apply a couple of times per year. Thanks.
